Today marked the kick-off event for the 18th Annual Greater Philadelphia MLK Day of Service directed by the Global Citizen organization. Held at Girard College, the historic Founders Hall was the filled with school children, city officials, business and non-profit executives, parents and press to welcome the Day of Service. Before the press conference commenced, a children’s choir performed and a mural inspired by MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech was presented.
Managing Director and Deputy Mayor Richard Negrin was given the first official MLK Day of Service T-shirt by Global Citizen President Todd Bernstein. Negrin spoke about the principles of Martin Luther King before presenting Harris Wofford Active Citizen’s Award. “His principles of social justice, non-violence, anti-poverty, equality, and civil rights—there’s no more important moment for those principles than today.” Negrin cited the recent gun violence across the country along with the issues of poverty and equality of opportunity that plague our community. He connected King’s message of service as an answer to those problems.
“The Mayor and I believe that we must all come together to solve our city’s challenges. Your government can’t do it alone. The King Day of Service is an example of how—in the spirit of Dr. King—we can come together and take out all of the challenges in our City.”
Negrin spoke at the event on behalf of Mayor Nutter who was meeting with Goldman Sachs about a small-business initiative announced earlier today.
Negrin presented the 15th Annual Harris Wofford Active Citizen’s Award to Clear Channel’s Director of News and Community Affairs, Loraine Ballard.
Other speakers at the event included Girard College President Clay Armbrister, and the Philadelphia School District’s Superintendent Dr. William R. Hint Jr., among other dignitaries.
The MDO sends a special thanks to Todd Bernstein and the entire Global Citizen organization for their work on the MLK Day of Service. Should you be interested in participating in the 1/21/13 event, please visit the official website at: http://www.mlkdayofservice.org/.
