2013 Spatial Data Refresh

The GIS Services Group at the Office of Innovation and Technology is pleased to announce the completion of the 2013 Spatial Data Refresh which involved the update of 29 previously released datasets and the initial publication of 16 new datasets.

Open Data Philly

The publication and update of data was the result of a massive collaborative effort between many City departments and our partner organizations, OpenDataPhilly and PASDA. PASDA (Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access) is the official public access geospatial clearinghouse for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. They provide data hosting services to the City of Philadelphia, which allows us to easily share our data with the public. After the data is made available for download on PASDA, a summary page linking to that download is created on OpenDataPhilly. OpenDataPhilly serves as an easy-to-use catalog of the City’s data downloads and web services which makes discovering data simple and easy for the public.

Without the assistance of these organizations and the momentum from the City departments, this data refresh would not have been possible.

The release of new data sets and the continued effort to maintain already published data aligns with the Mayor’s vision for sharing more of the City’s data and information with the public through Executive Order 1-12 on Open Data and Government Transparency. This initiative encourages transparency and accountability within City Government and also mandates the publication of three new high-value datasets not currently available by each Deputy Mayor. Some of the most important data we have as a City government is geospatial data, and taking steps to share more of this data with the public is an important part of realizing the Mayor’s vision.
