The City of Philadelphia has a thriving community of professionals that utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) software to help inform their day to day decisions as well as improve the quality and quantity of data available internally and publicly.
In conjunction with the Mayor’s Summer Internship Program, the GIS Services Group at the Office of Innovation and Technology is pleased to announce the 5th consecutive City of Philadelphia GIS Internship Program for 2013. Last year the program received dozens of applications from the region and helped place 11 interns in 10 City departments.
The City of Philadelphia GIS Internship Program seeks dedicated students with experience working with GIS software or spatial data. The program is comprised of a 10-week summer internship program for current enrolled upper-classmen, graduate students or recent graduates. The GIS Internship Program begins on June 3, 2013 and ends August 9, 2013. The GIS Internship Program is designed to expose interns to GIS in public service as a potential career, while providing them with hands-on work experience in City departments. GIS interns are assigned to City projects and are expected to provide research, administrative and/or staff assistance to managers within City departments and offices. Interns are invited to participate in optional group enrichment activities as well as a culminating event featuring presentations by interns. The typical weekly commitment for GIS Interns is 20 hours/week. The application deadline for students is Sunday, March 24th.
Potential applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a current undergraduate or graduate student or a recent graduate
- Have completed at least their sophomore year prior to the start of the program
The program is a fantastic opportunity to work on exciting City projects and share their work with their peers. Interns who participated in our 2012 program had the opportunity to present their accomplishments at department meetings and national conferences. Of last year’s interns, many continue to work at the City in some capacity.
